STAYING FIT AND INJURY FREE THIS WINTER
After a busy (and often excessive) holiday season, many of us are now turning our attention to getting active over the next few months. Whether that means slipping on the sneakers, strapping on the ski boots, lacing up the skates or buckling up the snowshoes, here are some important considerations to bear in mind before you get rolling.
Know YOUR Body.
A Biomechanical Evaluation is a smart place to start before you undertake your New Year's resolutions. A complete analysis of your current strength, flexibility, joint movement and posture is conducted and the findings are presented in a customized report that highlights specific areas of need and attention. This information will not only help you make informed decisions regarding your choice of activities, but also offer some insight as to how you should approach each one.
Don’t be too “Gung-Ho”.
Enthusiasm is an important trait when it comes to keeping up your exercise routine, but trying to do too much too fast does not give your body a chance to get used to the increased activity. Listen to your body and take a break when your muscles need one. Too often, people run the risk of doing some serious injury when they overexert themselves. With the help of your Physiotherapist and Massage Therapist, you can set goals and lay-out a plan that allows you to achieve goals at a safe and realistic pace.
Warm Up.
The pros do it, and they do it because it is a proven fact that warm ups significantly reduce your risk of injury. A typical warm up involves 5-10 minutes of easy, fluent motion (e.g. walking or light spinning on a bike) followed by stretching. You should be particularly focused on muscles that will be in use during your activity of choice. Our Physiotherapists know muscle movement inside and out, and can help tailor a stretch routine that is specifically suited to the activities you are planning to do.
Be Informed. Be Proactive.
We are here to provide the support and encouragement you need to achieve great health. The Active Motion team of therapists offer much more than rehabilitation services. We can conduct postural analysis, help you develop workout routines, teach you appropriate stretches and work with you to help alleviate any areas of discomfort. We are here to give you the attention you deserve to help you take charge of your health in 2009 and achieve the results you desire.
